Coming from a Musicians Family, Johannes was exposed to music at an extremely early age. Over the years he learned all sorts of different styles by listening and mostly playing in various ensembles and having lessons from some of the best teachers in Germany and Europe. He started his path in music with drums and over the years different instruments came and went with one being the guitar. During his teens he participated in different competitions on all different instruments and won 2nd price with his percussion ensemble at the national edition of 'Jugend musiziert'. At the age of 18 after graduating from high school he decided to study guitar and got accepted to do so in the beautiful city of Arnhem. Now being 22 he expanded his musical horizon and abilities by writing own material in different styles for small and big ensembles. In his mind there are still big plans for future projects that fuses artistic disciplines to a greater experience.
Rocco Romano is a guitarist and composer, born in 1996 in the province of Lecce, in South Italy. After a first musical experience with an electric bass, he started studying jazz guitar at the age of 14 inspired by the classic jazz records of his parents. He had individual lessons for five years and at the same time he had the opportunity to attend several masterclasses and confront himself with some of the greatest Italian jazz players, having also different experiences in other environments (Umbria Jazz Clinics in 2013 and the Five Weeks program at the Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2014, for which he won a scholarship). In 2015 Rocco won a contest for young jazz musicians organized by the Locomotive Jazz Festival that gave him the opportunity to play opening concerts for great musicians such as Paolo Fresu, Omar Sosa, Lars Danielsson and more, and to take part of a live recorded album (the “Locomotive Jazz Compilation”) labeled by “Workin’ Label” (Lecce). The same year, fascinated by the north european musical scene, he decided to study guitar abroad, attending the Bachelor program at the ArtEZ School of Music in Arnhem. Here he had the opportunity to develop his own ideas and to play in several collaborations with both students and teachers. Rocco is currently busy with several active projects and plays on regular basis within the Dutch and German territory.
Music really comes to life when two minds play together. With this idea Johannes Sauer wanted to start a new Project. The beauty of a Duo can be heard in its wide range of dynamics. It is an immediate interaction between two musicians that at its best find the perfect balance between emptiness and density. Both influenced by the old masters of jazz, Rocco and Johannes play a combination of old and well known standards and own compositions that stretch these established characteristics. A big part in there playing involves the freedom to improvise that shapes the word jazz.
